As the founder of the Pittsburgh Beautification Project, I've facilitated public painting parties with thousands of Pittsburgh residents painting their own Warhol flowers, an example of which is posted in my pics of artworks.  I've collaborated with Laura Jean McLaughlin  on a number of large publicly created mosaic projects, including Animal Adventure, commissioned by the City of Pittsburgh, made with over a thousand kids over the course of a summer. We also had the honor of creating a glass mosaic door for a City of Asylum residence with Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka and Mattress Factory Art Kids.  I've also worked with the Industrial Arts Cooperative on large unauthorized sculptures, including the Carrie Deer, which Sharon Brown has made a great documentary movie about.

My art has evolved in a curious way over the years, touching on many different mediums and genres.  Portraiture, however, remains the most challenging and rewarding aspect of my visual work.  In the public art sphere, I consider myself to be a modern day landscape painter, though instead of painting landscapes on canvas, I paint the real urban landscape that we live in.  Several of my artworks comprise an entire city block - "A Blues for The Block", which is inspired by Romare Bearden's "The Block".  I've taken Bearden's collage technique and urban landscape a step further; using hundreds of wooden boards that I've cut and painted, I attached the boards along vacant storefronts on the 800 block of Penn Avenue in Wilkinsburg.  I make up the compositions on the spot, while screwing the panels onto the existing plywood covering the windows.  (Two examples of the storefront windows can be seen in my work samples displayed here).  I don't care for "artist statements"; I'd rather let the work speak for itself.

I have been in over 100 exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the U.S., including the Carnegie Museum of Art, Hunter Museum of American Art, Norton Museum of Art, Chicago Cultural Center, Monterey Museum of Art, George Eastman House, Andy Warhol Museum, Mattress Factory Museum, and Mendelson Gallery.  My ArtoMat work with Michael Saxman has been at the Whitney Museum and New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York. I am also a poet, translator, filmmaker, and singer.  I've translated two books of poetry by Jean-Joseph Rabearivelo, the great African surrealist of Madagascar, and have recorded and performed with the bands Bingo Quixote and Media Circus Extravaganza.  My song "Waterboarding" with Media Circus Extravaganza was a Track of the Day for GarageBand.com
