With an appreciation for the interaction of paint and mixed media materials, I am focusing on formal and emotional associations.  My collection of found objects gathered since childhood serve as the starting point for an intuitive reaction. While I explore landmark memories in my lifetime, I think about other important events and the nostalgia or trauma that the memory brings.  Responding to the materials in this way brings about other signifiers including color relationships, symbols, and text that triggers memories and emotions.  Working from formal relationships formed on the surface allow for imperfect moments for me to reflect and react to, continuing the process of exploration and self-discovery.

Desiree Matia (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1986) earned a B.S.Ed. in art education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and earned her M.F.A. in painting at the Savannah College of Art and Design, in Savannah, Georgia. She had her most recent solo show, "Fleeting Elation" at Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, and group exhibitions in Pittsburgh, Johnstown, and Savannah, including “AAP 106th Annual”, “Electric Kool Aid”, “Just Say'N”, and “Port City Review Showcase”. She creates large-scale abstract paintings with a focus on the relationships between the materials, oppositional formal elements and intuitive process. Currently, Matia is a studio art teacher at Propel Schools in Pittsburgh, and explores the relationship between nostalgia and association in her work.
